The Australian Consulate General, Chennai, is seeking applications for the position of Public Diplomacy Manager.

CLOSING DATE: Wednesday 2 July, 2014
WORK HOURS: Full-time; 37.5 hours Monday to Friday
STARTING SALARY: circa Rs. 80,484 – 98,000*

Employment is offered subject to the successful completion of pre-employment Police and medical checks. Engagement will also be subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period of three (3) months.

The salary package includes annual leave, medical and accident insurance, Diwali bonus and provident fund provisions.

DUTY STATEMENT

PUBLIC DIPLOMACY MANAGER

Under the direction of the Deputy Consul-General, as part of the policy team, and in cooperation with the Austrade Chennai public relations team and public diplomacy teams in New Delhi and Mumbai, the Public Diplomacy Manager will:

1. Assist in the development of a post public diplomacy strategy and a program of activities across the post’s region of responsibility that supports the post’s broader policy and commercial objectives;

2. Manage the post’s DFAT public diplomacy budget, including helping to secure sponsorships and partnerships that extends the post’s public diplomacy budget, delivering sponsor/partner benefits, and overseeing disbursements;

3. Develop a network of media relationships to facilitate post’s public diplomacy efforts, including publicising Australian activities and mitigating any negative press;

4. Draft and disseminate media releases and media background materials;

5. Organise media conferences and interviews as required;

6. Contribute to the design and manage the production of publications and other materials that support the post’s public diplomacy objectives;

7. Manage the post’s on-line presence, including development and maintenance of a post website (based on the DFAT website), ensuring its content remains fresh, accurate and relevant;

8. Establish a post social media presence;

9. Organise or leverage off Australia-focussed public events, including public lectures, conferences, cultural performances, and film festivals;

10. Arrange visit programs for speakers, cultural or media visitors;

11. In cooperation with Austrade Chennai, foster the development of Australian alumni groups in major southern cities and engage them in work to promote Australia-India education relations;

12. Assist with promoting and setting in place arrangements for the New Colombo Plan in south India; and

13. Other duties as directed.

 


SELECTION CRITERIA

PUBLIC DIPLOMACY MANAGER

All applicants must make their claims, with reference to the above duties, against the following selection criteria:
1. Strong administrative, organisational and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability in managing and coordinating events, programs, and/or visiting delegations.

2. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, and flexibility in being able to accept and/or share tasks.

3. Proven ability to liaise competently with senior government officials, media and industry representatives, academics and civil society representatives. Established existing contacts an advantage.

4. Strong understanding of standard office technology, in particular Microsoft Office software and social media functions. Experience with website content management an advantage.

5. Demonstrated budget management skills.

6. Excellent English writing and speaking abilities essential. A working knowledge of Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu an advantage.

7. Relevant tertiary qualifications.
