The Australian Consulate General, Chennai, is seeking applications for the position of Government Relations and Research Manager.

WORK HOURS: Full-time; 37.5 hours Monday to Friday
STARTING SALARY: circa Rs. 64,037 – 73,230* (per month)

Employment is offered subject to the successful completion of pre-employment Police and medical checks. Engagement will also be subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period of three (3) months.
The salary package includes annual leave, medical and accident insurance, Diwali bonus and provident fund provisions.

DUTY STATEMENT
GOVERNMENT RELATIONS & RESEARCH MANGER
Under the direction of the Consul-General and the Consul/Vice Consul (Economic), as part of the Policy Team, the Government Relations and Research Manager will:
1. Monitor the local media, including both English language and vernacular media, and advise daily on political, economic and social developments in South India that may affect Australian interests;
2. Obtain economic and trade data on South India and undertake in-depth written analysis of current developments and issues as requested;
3. Monitor political developments in South India, provide advice on developments that affect Australian interests, and prepare in-depth written analysis as requested;
4. Develop a network of contacts and relationships to facilitate post’s policy work, including government, business, academic and think-tank circles;
5. Participate in calls, take notes and write up records where required;
6. Oversee, scan and cull as necessary clipping of local print media, both English language and vernacular
7. Draft cables reporting on political or economic developments in South India as directed;
8. Translate and interpret between English and South Indian languages (e.g.: Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam)
9. Assist the Executive Assistant and Visits Coordinator with organising draft programs and making associated arrangements for official visitors to South India, and for the Consul-General’s official visits outside of Chennai;
10. Participate in and contribute to the work of the post’s Direct Aid Program committee;
11. Back up the Executive Assistant and Visits Coordinator when required; and
12. Other duties as directed.
SELECTION CRITERIA
GOVERNMENT RELATIONS & RESEARCH MANGER
All applicants must make their claims, with reference to the above duties, against the following selection criteria:
1. Strong research and analysis skills, with good knowledge of Indian state and Union government bodies. Awareness of political and economic issues at play in South India.
2. Ability to organise workload according to evolving priorities
3. Strong written and spoken communication skills in English, including demonstrated report writing skills.
4. Fluency in Tamil is mandatory; fluency in any other South Indian languages (Kanaada, Telugu, Malayalam) would be an advantage. Experience in providing official translation or interpreting would be highly regarded.
5. Proven ability to deal with a wide range of clients, from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Ability to develop and maintain contacts in government, businesses, universities and think-tanks.
6. Ability to work as a team player to help the Consulate General achieve overall goals.
