Sagara Kanyaka: The Lady from the Sea

Brought to life with cinematic projections and live music, Sagara Kanyaka is a meditative and poetic adaptation of master playwright Henrik Ibsen’s classic love triangle The Lady from the Sea, which delves into the conflicts and confusion implicit in romantic relationships.

“I am delighted that we are able to present Sagara Kanyaka: Lady of the Sea to Indian audiences. This Australia-India collaborative work is being performed in India for the first time in Bengaluru. It is a captivating performance using cinematic visuals and live music”, said Mr Peter Varghese, Australia’s High Commissioner to India.

Sagara Kanyaka: The Lady from the Sea is being presented in Bengaluru and Kolkata as part of Oz Fest, the biggest Australian cultural festival ever staged in India.

Sagara Kanyaka is a collaborative theatre and music work between award-winning Indian theatre company Abhinaya Theatre, Australian band Topology and the Brisbane Powerhouse. The Lady from the Sea is one of Ibsen’s iconic works, featuring a married woman who must decide between her husband and her first fiancé - a rebellious sailor who returns decades after his escape from the law to claim her hand. The collaborative theatre work features a new music score commission by renowned Australian composer Robert Davidson.

Abhinaya’s Artistic Director MG Jyothish explains “Marriage and love are popular topics in India and this show explores the links between love and a sense of duty in relationships, with insights that are still relevant all these years after Ibsen wrote the piece.”

“When creating the show we decided to strip it back to the three main characters, and use the cinematic projections and live music to create an epic theatre experience,” said Jyothish.
