Visions of Australia in 2050 and beyond:
“Now and When: Australian Urbanism” exhibition arrives in India
Experience a future world of floating cities, submerged metropolises and new desert tracts with NOW and WHEN. The 3D exhibition features spectacular architectural visions of Australia’s potential urban future in 2050 and beyond, by leading Australian architects, designers and urban planners.
“This extraordinary exhibition enables the viewer to experience Australia as it is today, and as it could be in 2050 through the use of new technology. It is an eye opening experience and a demonstration of Australian innovation,” said Australian High Commissioner, Mr Peter Varghese.
Opening in Mumbai in November, then touring to Bengaluru, Coimbatore and Gandhinagar, NOW and WHEN will conclude its five-city India tour in Delhi in January 2013. Presented by the Australian Institute of Architects for the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2010, the exhibition’s India tour is organised in partnership with the India Design Forum as part of Oz Fest.
The exhibition is an unprecedented audio-visual feast with ground-breaking 3D stereoscopic aerial views of Australian urban landscapes accompanied by an immersive soundscape. It presents an entirely new angle on the possibilities inherent in our cities and explores the creative potential of architecture in Australia. It also looks at the challenge Australia faces in developing urban spaces and landscapes, including the environmental consequences of development.
The ‘NOW’ component by photographer and Creative Director John Gollings features a sequence of 3D aerial images of three contemporary Australian urban landscapes – Melbourne, Sydney and Surfers Paradise – contrasted with giant mining pits.
The ‘WHEN’ component, overseen by Co-Creative Director Ivan Rijavec and produced by FloodSlicer, features a nine-minute sequence of ideas from 17 architectural collaborations of possible future urban spaces, including floating or submerged cities and desert spaces.
NOW and WHEN debuted at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale and has since attracted huge crowds in South Korea, China, Indonesia and Taiwan.
