Australia’s largest comedy festival returns to India

Get ready for a taste of Aussie humour as Australia’s largest comedy festival returns to India as part of Australia Fest.

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow will be heading to India for a five-city tour this November, hitting Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata and Delhi before a season at the Bengaluru Comedy Festival.

Australia’s High Commissioner to India Her Excellency Ms Harinder Sidhu said, “Audiences in Australia have been enjoying the fun and frivolity of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for a long time now.”

“We are thrilled to bring four of the funniest Australian comedians to India to showcase everything from stand-up and sketch to satire as part of Australia Fest,” said Ms Sidhu.

Featuring a diverse and dynamic line-up of performers – the ideal Aussie comedian Daniel Connell, the relatable and hilarious Mel Buttle, a stand-up comedian with a surreal take on the everyday Guy Montgomery, and an observational and often-absurd comedian Aaron Chen – the tour promises to be a comedy experience you will never forget.

"The Melbourne International Comedy Festival is delighted to be a part of Australia Fest – returning to India with the Roadshow for the fifth year. It’s a true cultural exchange with some of the world’s funniest from our Festival sharing the stage with our Indian comedy collaborators, some of whom have already visited Melbourne and some who we hope to welcome in the future. It will be a huge night of laughs, celebrating India and Australia’s shared sense of humour!" said Susan Provan, Festival Director, Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Aaron Chen, one of the comedians, said “I'm incredibly excited to perform in India and also just to be in India for the first time. I don't know what to expect from this beautiful country except open arms and warm naans (I hope to have at least one).”

Another comedian Guy Montgomery said, “Every year at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival I'm blown away by the quality of the comedians who come over from India. I can't wait for them to say the same about me!”

Presented as part of Australia Fest, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, which is a platinum sponsor of Australia Fest. Roadshow India is proudly co-presented with Only Much Louder and Comedy Wagon.

About the comedians:

Daniel Connell

Daniel Connell could easily be described as the ideal Aussie comedian; affable, loveable and hilarious. His observational, dry, often unanticipated comedy has seen him take to stages all over the country. Since 2010 Daniel has quickly established himself in Australian comedy scene, often sharing a stage with big-name Australian comedians and performing at prestigious comedy festivals across the world.

Mel Buttle

Mel Buttle is a hilarious bundle of contradictions, and she’s a package that is rapidly making herself felt across television and the live comedy circuit. Alongside hit live shows, Mel is a seasoned writer with a weekly column in Queensland’s The Courier Mail and TV writing credits including Please Like Me and This Week Live. Mel is also the co-host on ‘The Great Australian Bake Off’ for Foxtel’s LifeStyle Channel.

Guy Montgomery

Guy Montgomery is an award-winning comedian, improviser and screenwriter, best known as co-host of the international smash podcast ‘The Worst Idea of All Time’. A stand-up comedian with a surreal take on the everyday, Guy has won praise and awards in his native New Zealand and across Australia. He has been on TV, the radio and the internet, a genuine triple threat.

Aaron Chen

Sydney boy Aaron Chen is a ‘stone cold killer with exquisite mic technique’, delivering fresh, funny and often-absurd comedy. Aaron made his mark in 2017 with his debut solo show entitled ‘The Infinite Faces of Chenny Baby’, which toured nationally in front of sold out crowds and high critical praise, including the award for Best Newcomer at the 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Sydney Comedy Festival.
