Australian support takes Indian law to the people

Thanks to new technology, members of the public and legal practitioners alike can now access Indian legislation, treaties and case law free of charge. The service is provided by the Legal Information Institute (LII of India).

LII of India is a joint project developed by leading Australian and Indian legal education institutions. It was launched on 9 March in Delhi by the Union Minister of Law and Justice, Dr M Veerappa Moily.

Speaking at the launch, Australia’s Deputy High Commissioner, Dr Lachlan Strahan, said ‘Australia is pleased to support the development of LII of India. It is a project that builds on Australia and India’s broadening cooperation. It also reflects our shared values our commitment to democracy and the rule of law.’

Dr Strahan said ‘ongoing support from Australia, coupled with India’s renowned IT capability, will ensure LII of India continues to grow, making an increasing number of Indian legal resources freely available to the citizens of India and the world.’

LII of India comprises 108 legal databases covering all Indian State, Union Territory and Central Government jurisdictions. The content on LII of India is fully integrated with other Legal Information Institutes, including the World Legal Information Institute, a collection of over 270 databases from 48 jurisdictions in 20 countries.

The LawCite international citator is another feature integrated into LII of India. LawCite automatically tracks citations of over 5.5 million decisions to show the citation histories of Indian cases, law journal articles and treaties both within in India and internationally.

Support for the establishment of LII of India was provided by the Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII), Australia’s largest online legal public library. Its development was made possible due to funding provided by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) under its Public Sector Linkages Program.

Further launches for LII of India are planned for Hyderabad (11 March), Bangalore (23 March) and Kolkata (8 April). LII of India can be accessed online at www.liiofindia.org .
