Weather Makers: the story of Global Warming

Lecture tour by noted Australian environmentalist and thinker

One of Australia’s leading environmentalists, Professor Tim Flannery, will be in India for a lecture-tour from 26 January- 5 February 2009. He will speak on Environment and Climate Change issues at various forums in Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad and New Delhi.

“We have no better ambassador than Professor Flannery to convey Australia’s commitment and concern towards global warming and climate change issues. At a time when environment issues have reached the forefront of public debate in Australia and the rest of the world, Flannery’s ideas can help provide a direction to the cause of fighting global warming,” said Mr John McCarthy, Australian High Commissioner to India.

Among the range of forums Professor Flannery will address include talks at the IIT TechFest in Mumbai and a public lecture at the World Institute of Sustainable Energy in Pune. He will also deliver the Vikram Sarabhai Memorial Lecture and launch the Management Education Centre on Climate Change at the Gujarat University in Ahmedabad. In New Delhi, his engagements will include speaking at the TERI YUVA Meet and the Energy and Climate Summit – 2009. He will also address senior school students throughout his tour.

Professor Flannery has published more than 140 peer-reviewed scientific papers. His books include the landmark works The Future Eaters and The Weather Makers, which has been translated into 25 languages. Tim Flannery dedicated the first edition of The Weather Makers to children: 'to all of their generation who will have to live with the consequences of our decisions.' The Indian edition of The Weather Makers is available in bookstores now.

Professor Flannery’s visit to India is on an invitation from the Australia-India Council (AIC). Established in 1992 by the Australian Government to broaden the bilateral relationship through increasing levels of knowledge and understanding between the peoples and institutions of Australia and India, AIC continues to play an active role in promoting long-term contacts and exchanges between both countries.

Professor Flannery was named Australian of the Year in 2007.
