VACANCY NOTICE - PUBLIC DIPLOMACY OFFICER

WORK HOURS:                                            Full-time; 37.5 hours Monday to Friday

STARTING SALARY:                                   INR 53,439

The Australian Consulate General, Chennai, is seeking applications for the position of Public Diplomacy Officer.

Any employment at the Consulate General is offered subject to the successful completion of pre-employment Police and medical checks.  Engagement will also be subject to the satisfactory completion of a probationary period of six (6) months. 

The salary package includes annual leave, medical and accident insurance, Diwali bonus and provident fund provisions.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Public Diplomacy Manager, as part of the policy team, and in cooperation with the Austrade Chennai public relations team and public diplomacy teams in New Delhi and Mumbai, the Public Diplomacy Deputy Manager will:

  1. Monitor the local media daily for reporting related to Australia in the south Indian media that may affect Australian interests;
  2. Clip, copy and distribute English and Tamil local print media relating to Australia;
  3. Assist in the drafting and dissemination of media releases and media background materials;
  4. Assist with organisation of media conferences and interviews as required;
  5. Contribute to the design and manage the production of publications and other materials that support the post’s public diplomacy objectives;                                      
  6. Maintain post’s on-line presence, including post’s website, ensuring its content remains fresh, accurate and relevant;
  7. Maintaining database of contacts for media, and other sectoral contacts
  8. Assist with Arrange visit programs for speakers, cultural or media visitors;
  9. Assist with the management of post events,
  10. Other duties as directed.

SELECTION CRITERIA

All applicants must make their claims in writing, with reference to the above duties, against the following selection criteria:

  1. Good administrative, organisational and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability in managing and coordinating events, programs, and/or visiting delegations.
  2. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, and flexibility in being able to accept and/or share tasks.
  3. Proven ability to liaise with government officials, media and industry representatives, academics and civil society representatives.  Established existing contacts an advantage.
  4. Good ability to speak and write clearly in both English and Tamil is essential.  A working knowledge of Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu is an advantage.
  5. Good understanding of standard office technology, in particular Microsoft Office software and social media functions. 
  6. Budget management skills and advantage.
  7. Relevant tertiary qualifications.
