Australian High Commission participates in 'The Paralympic Story'

Australian High Commission participates in 'The Paralympic Story'

Australia has a long association with the Paralympic Games. We are one of 12 countries to have competed in every Paralympic Summer Games and one of seven countries to have won a gold medal at each Summer Game since Rome 1960. With a passion for sport and a high value for inclusion, Australia is an international advocate for promoting the full and equal participation of people with disability.

The Australian High Commission participated in ‘The Paralympic Story’ hosted by the Paralympic Committee of India in Ahmedabad on 19 December. The event brought together sports administrators, Indian and international officials of the Paralympic community, sport governing bodies and Indian athletes. Simon O’Connor, Second Secretary, spoke about Australia’s experience in promoting grassroots para-sports. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over 50 per cent of persons aged 5 to 14 years with a disability participated in physical activity for sport. The Australian Paralympic Committee consider sport as a great channel for people with a disability to get active and break down stereotypes that limit opportunity.
Other presenters included Mr Gursharan Singh, Vice President of the Paralympic Committee of India, and 2016 Paralympian Gold Medalist for India, Ms Deepa Malik.
